Status of the Market for Solar Thermal Systems

Market Size and Trends

In 2008, the total primary energy consumption in Burkina Faso was estimated at 2625 ktep with a strong reliance on biomass: it represents 80% of the primary energy consumption. Burkina Faso's electrification rate is 16.4%. Only 112 counties are served on the 350 in the country and the supply of serviced locations is very uncertain, particularly during the period from April to June.

The solar thermal system market for the production of hot water in Burkina Faso is still nascent, although installations from the 1980s have been identified. So far, there are neither studies to document the state of the solar thermal market nor all thermal installations in Burkina Faso. The first activities were initiated by the 2iE Foundation in 2014.

Typical Applications and Products

Solar thermal collectors are installed mainly for the production of hot water in homes. The main use is personal hygiene, especially in times of the year when temperatures are relatively low (November to February and July to August (rainy season). This water is used also to the dishes, when the need for personal hygiene is satisfied. However, some believe that investing in a domestic solar water heater in Sahelian countries like Burkina Faso is irrelevant in view of the duration and annual use low depreciation that would result. Nevertheless, the development of the middle class, using air conditioning, could lead to greater use of solar hot water.

The use in hotels is similar but the demand for hot water is a priori more spread out over the year, users from all walks of life with varied requirements. Experience has also shown that users, wherever they come, tend to use hot water as it becomes available. In health infrastructure, the need for hot water is constant throughout the year, especially for cleaning equipment and care in maternity in particular.

Other Key Topics

Local production is the main solar water heater provider in Burkina Faso. This production is mainly provided by local artisans. Some of these artisans were trained by the SARC or the APEES (Association for the Promotion and Operation of Solar Energy). This association, which operated from 1994 to 2000 in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso, the economic capital of Burkina Faso, had 28 craftsmen who contributed to the creation of businesses operating primarily in the solar photovoltaic. According to producers, the problems are related to the high cost of equipment for the manufacture of solar water heaters and lack of grants and from state support. There is also no funding to create or test components in the sense of innovation.

Status of the Market for Solar Buildings

Scope

Solar buildings are a not too much developed matter in the ECOWAS Region (15 West African countries) yet. However there are some examples of solar buildings in Cape Verde, like the CERMI Building which is a Centre for Renewable Energy and Industrial Maintenance. It’s a good example of how to save energy because of the design, the architecture of the building, natural ventilation, solar PV, solar thermal cooling for selected training rooms.

In Mali there is traditional architecture done with clay, using natural ventilation, that allows the entrance of light to the interior of the building, but keeping it comfortable at the same time. The Great Mosque of Djenné, which is a large adobe building that is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, is an example.
