The joint 81st SHC Executive Committee Meeting will be held in parallel with the EBC Executive Committee Meeting in London on 8 - 9 June 2017. The meetings are being hosted by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (DBEIS), the University College London Energy Institute (UCLEI) and the RCUK Centre for Energy Epidemiology (CEE).

Venue
Both the Technical Day and the ExCo Meetings will take place at The Westminster Conference Centre, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0ET which is adjacent to the offices of DBEIS and close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. The Technical Tour will include visits to a number of contemporary low energy buildings in London and a visit to the former Olympic Park to view the recent developments and the district energy system.
The nearest underground (tube) stations are Westminster, which is on the Jubilee, District and Circle lines and St James' Park which is on the District and Circle lines. There are also many bus connections and full details can be found at the Transport for London website. London tubes and buses do not accept cash but you can purchase an Oyster Card or you may be able to use your own debit or credit cards if they have the ‘contactless’ payment facility.
Travel
London is served by major airports at Heathrow and Gatwick. Gatwick has a direct link to Victoria Station which is only 10 mins walk from 1 Victoria Street. It is also served by smaller airports at Luton, Stansted and London City. Rail connections from Brussels, Paris and beyond terminate at London St Pancras which is very close to the offices of the UCL Energy Institute and a 30 minute journey by Underground to 1 Victoria Street in Westminster.
Accommodation
It has not been possible to secure block reservations at specific hotels near the venue and it is therefore proposed that you use one of the online booking systems such as Booking.com to locate a suitable hotel that meets your requirement and budget. A list of nearby hotels can be found by following this link: Hotels. Please book as early as possible because rooms will be difficult to find closer to the dates. When booking a hotel you should consider transport options to the conference centre at 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0ET, which are detailed below.
Wednesday Evening Reception
The reception will take place at One Great George Street (www.onegreatgeorgestreet.com) which is a short walk from the conference centre at 1 Victoria Street. Members of the UCL team will lead groups of people from the conference centre at 6pm on a route that will take in Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Pier (where the Thames Cruise will depart the following evening) and Portcullis House (a naturally ventilated building designed by Hopkins Architects to provide office accommodation for members of Parliament:
Thursday Dinner and Thames Cruise
A dinner has been organised on board the Thames Luxury Cruise boat the Elizabethan on the evening of Thursday 8th June. This will leave Westminster Pier at 7pm and cruise along the Thames returning at 11pm. A full 3 course meal with wine will be served and there will be a jazz band on board to provide some background music and entertainment.
A reception is also being planned for the evening of Wednesday 7th June and further details of this will be provided in the near future.
Saturday Technical Tour
A tour has been arranged on Saturday 10th June at 10.30am to view the new development at Kings Cross (www.kingscross.co.uk). This development has a strong focus on low energy demand and sustainability (https://www.kingscross.co.uk/sustainability). The tour will start and finish at the Kings Cross Visitor Centre just 5 minutes from Kings Cross station which has good underground connections and is adjacent to the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras. It will take 2 hours and conclude around 12.30pm. For those travelling with cases it will be possible to leave these in a room at the Visitor Centre. The tour will be provided free of charge by the team at Kings Cross and space is limited to a total of 25 people for reasons of health and safety.
An alternative technical tour is being investigated to the district energy centre for the former Olympic site which is now a major mixed-use development known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (www.queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk). This tour is likely to finish around 12 noon and it would take visitors about 40-60 minutes to return to Central London stations such as Paddington and Victoria from where trains depart to Gatwick and Heathrow airports. Further details will be announced shortly if this tour is arranged.
